Despite an impressive record including an Under 23 ICF World Championship and podium finishes at major events, Uli Hart feels truly established only after securing his first South African national surfski title. He described the Durban race as a "proper downwind" with a strong field, making the victory particularly gratifying and a true mark of his arrival in the sport, especially after breaking Hank McGregor's five-year winning streak.

The Challenging Race

The race began calmly at Durban Point, but offshore, the wind intensified, creating larger runs and growing swells. The elite men's field launched without hesitation, with five-time defending champion Hank McGregor quickly setting the pace. Hart recounted catching McGregor's first wave, then strategically moving left to establish his own line and challenging pace, which he admitted was "pretty fast, even for me." Over the 23-kilometer course to Umdloti, Hart adopted an aggressive strategy, aiming to "break everyone up." He gained on McGregor and committed to "sending it," a bold move that proved successful. However, he faced hurdles: struggling to locate the turn buoy for the final kilometers and navigating Durban's strong shorebreak. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a lead to avoid a risky sprint finish, trusting his speed to secure the win.

A Historic Victory and Future Plans

Hart successfully navigated the shorebreak, crossing the line with a sufficient gap to claim his first senior national title in 1 hour, 25 minutes, and 53 seconds. He finished 30 seconds ahead of Mark Keeling (1:26:23), with Dawid Mocke (1:26:55) in third. Hank McGregor (1:27:06) and Josh Fenn (1:28:11) completed the top five in a highly competitive field.
