Ana Swetish, a leading U.S. surfski paddler, recently secured a remarkable victory at the Gorge Downwind Championships. Despite her established prowess, her immediate reaction to crossing the finish line was profound surprise. "I was genuinely astonished by how high I placed," Swetish confessed, noting the strong male competition and her third-place overall finish.
Her peers, however, were less surprised. Starting racing at 16 and placing third at the Gorge in 2018, Swetish is now a premier female downwind paddler globally. Domestically, her achievements often transcend gender, with multiple overall victories. This race marked a substantial progression, as she triumphed in the women's category after an intense contest against former world champion Danielle Richards, and narrowly trailed men's champion Austin Kieffer.
"Upon exiting the water and reviewing the standings, I initially suspected an error," Swetish recounted, finding she was only 2 minutes and 20 seconds behind Kieffer, a fact later confirmed by GPS. She admitted to personal "races-within-races" during the event, often motivated by friendly rivalries. She clarified these challenges aren't about proving anything, but rather that these male paddlers from her supportive Pacific North-West community bring out her best.
Her primary objective was to reclaim the women's championship, a title she last won in 2021. Facing Danielle Richards, an elite paddler she had rarely defeated, the race was a demanding endurance test.
