Smith and Norton triumph in dramatic, penalty-marred WA Race Week races

Dramatic Finishes at Shaw and Partners WA Race Week

The second day of the Shaw and Partners WA Race Week delivered intense competition, culminating in controversial sprint finishes for both the men's and women's events.

Women's Race: A Penalty-Decided Victory

The fierce rivalry between Jemma Smith and Danielle McKenzie intensified in a dramatic race. Strong offshore winds forced a change from an 11-kilometer point-to-point event to a three-lap circuit. Smith and McKenzie battled closely, with the outcome decided by a sprint up the beach.

McKenzie was first to her feet but failed to drag her ski past the designated sponsor flags, a rule clearly stated in the pre-race briefing. Smith promptly informed officials, leading to McKenzie's penalty and relegation to second place, handing Smith the victory.

Smith admitted the win felt "not as sweet" due to the confusion, but acknowledged the ongoing tight tussle with McKenzie. The challenging looped course, further complicated by the men's chase pack merging with the women, demanded varied tactics. Smith described it as "really, really testing."

The women's podium included:

  • Jemma Smith (47:53)
  • Danielle McKenzie (48:49)
  • Maddie Schmidt (49:23), Canadian Olympian

Hannah Sculley and Michelle Burn also posted strong finishes.

Men's Race: Norton's Breakthrough Sprint

The men's event was equally thrilling. After an initial lead by Riley Fitzsimmons, German Gordan Harbrecht took command for two laps. A chase pack, featuring Cory Hill, Tom Norton, Mark Keeling, and Hank McGregor, eventually reeled him in. Harbrecht and Norton then broke away on the final turn, setting up a one-kilometer drag race.

Tom Norton secured a memorable sprint-finish victory, his first of this kind. He humorously recounted checking with Harbrecht about "dragging" before pushing for the win. This triumph marks a significant confidence...
