The Queensland paddling community is deeply saddened by the passing of Brad Russell, who tragically died during the Gold Coast's 14 Beaches downwind race last weekend. He was recovered from the ocean near the finish line at Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club, following what is suspected to have been a cardiac arrest. Despite immediate efforts by water safety, lifeguards, emergency services, and fellow paddlers, resuscitation was unsuccessful. On Tuesday morning, Brad's training group organized a paddle-out in Brisbane, observing a minute of silence and sharing memories of a man described as "passionate," "dedicated," and "a great friend." His wife, Melinda, and one of their sons were present. A distinguished lawyer, Brad was a partner at McCullough Robertson, leading their insurance and corporate risk division. In a statement, the firm acknowledged, "Beyond all Brad’s professional accomplishments, he was a wonderful friend, mentor, and colleague." They added, "He was a devoted husband and father, and our deepest sympathies are with Brad’s wife Melinda, and his sons Harry and Charlie." Despite his professional success, Brad's true passion was surf life saving. A six-year board member of Surf Life Saving Queensland, he was a cherished member of Maroochydore SLSC. Rob Elford, President of Maroochydore SLSC, told The Courier Mail, "Brad was an unwavering presence at the surf club – always there, always dependable." Elford also noted Brad, an enthusiastic paddler, was "always in the water," adding, "One does not simply decide to enter the 14 Beaches paddle marathon on a whim." This year, the 14 Beaches event also served as Paddle Australia’s national championships, attracting over 180 paddlers who experienced ideal downwind conditions.
