Nick Notten's triumphant return to the podium after overcoming health challenges

A Paddler's Journey: Gratitude and Comeback

Nick Notten, a respected surfski athlete, expresses profound gratitude for his sport, maintaining a positive outlook despite past health struggles. The 2021 ICF World Champion recently reflected on the extraordinary opportunities paddling has brought him, even during periods of illness, finding it "surreal" to travel to incredible places like Reunion Island for ICF World Cup races. His inspiring comeback story began with a significant setback two years prior, when he withdrew from a major race due to debilitating post-viral fatigue. This diagnosis, confirmed as Epstein-Barr Virus after a decline in his 2022 performance, compelled him to step away from elite sport, leaving his career uncertain. He found strength in optimism and a refusal to take himself or the sport too seriously. Understanding that stress exacerbated his condition, he adopted a "light-hearted way of thinking," accepting his situation without self-imposed pressure. This mindset, coupled with focusing on the sheer enjoyment of being on the water with friends, became the foundation of his recovery.

Triumphant Return at Pete Marlin

After a long and uncertain recovery, Notten triumphantly returned to the podium at the prestigious Pete Marlin race. He described feeling a "weight that’s off me," reaffirming his belief in his ability to compete at an elite level. While his physical capacity to paddle was never entirely lost, the ability to push himself against the world's best had been compromised. The gruelling 20-kilometer Pete Marlin course, with challenging conditions, was a true test. Notten showed no signs of his past limitations, convincingly reclaiming the coveted title. This performance, which Notten himself had doubted he could achieve again, made it the most enjoyable win of his career. His decisive victory made him believe he had regained his former strength.
