Honoring a Legacy at 'The Chucky'

Mitchell Trim, though not primarily an ocean ski specialist, joined fellow competitors in acknowledging the profound legacy of Charles Stewart. Trim expressed immense pride in lifting the trophy, reflecting on Stewart's positive impact on the paddling community and the Northern Beaches, feeling deeply honored to add his name to the list of winners.

Trim and Jemma Smith emerged as the dominant winners of the 2024 'The Chucky' race, which marked the return of the Shaw and Partners Australian Ocean Racing Series to the east coast, following two initial rounds in Adelaide, and served as a crucial lead-up to the WA Race Week.

Competitors enjoyed perfect conditions: clear blue skies and low 20s temperatures. The 16-kilometer, two-lap course from Fisherman’s Beach to North Narrabeen featured a moderate north-westerly wind, making the initial half challenging but offering excellent runs on the return journey.

Trim's Strategic Race

Mitchell Trim initiated an aggressive pace from the start, initially with Harry Taurins. Noticing competitors drafting, he strategically eased his effort. The lead group maintained pace until the North Narrabeen turn, where Trim accelerated, successfully establishing a significant lead.

Smith's Commanding Performance

While Trim led the men, Jemma Smith, the reigning Australian Ocean Racing Series champion, had asserted overall dominance from her earlier start. Smith was enthusiastic to return to competition on home waters, focusing on challenging herself and monitoring the men’s field on the triangular course.

Mid-Race Drama and Drafting

The two leaders converged at the end of the first lap at Fisherman’s Beach. Smith, on a tighter line, found herself on a collision course with Trim, who was on a wider angle.
