Jemma Smith, celebrated as one of Australia's premier surfski paddlers, boasts an impressive resume: a successful ironwoman career, numerous State and Australian Surf Life Saving titles, and representing her nation at canoe sprint World Championships. She is also the reigning ICF Ocean Racing World Champion. Yet, one prestigious title had consistently eluded her: The Shaw and Partners Doctor.
Today, Smith finally claimed this coveted win, a moment she described as deeply significant. “It’s the one that I really wanted,” she shared, highlighting the race's special and prestigious status within the paddling community. She expressed immense satisfaction at achieving this long-pursued victory.
Smith entered The Doctor as a strong favorite, having showcased dominant form throughout the Shaw and Partners WA Race Week, including victories in the West Coast Downwind and the Dr Benjamin Hewitt Sunset Surfski Series races. Despite her strong lead-up, she approached the race cautiously, recalling last year's second-place finish to Danielle McKenzie. This experience had taught her valuable lessons about optimal line selection and self-belief.
The race began with an intense sprint for a $2,500 Hot Spot prize, with defending champion Danielle McKenzie surging ahead. Smith strategically allowed McKenzie to take the early lead, prioritizing a sustainable rhythm. McKenzie later acknowledged the toll of her early effort. Smith maintained her controlled tempo until Cory Hill's presence around the 7-kilometer mark prompted her to intensify her focus and adapt to the ocean conditions. Her consistent and powerful paddling secured a comfortable win in just over two hours, nearly two minutes ahead of Danielle McKenzie and South Africa's Michelle Burn. Kira Bester and Georgia Miller rounded out the top five.
