Hill extends winning streak, Bester takes women's title at Hong Kong Dragon Run

Hill's Enduring Connection to the Dragon Run

The Hong Kong Dragon Run holds a unique significance for Australian surfski champion Cory Hill. His journey into the sport was profoundly influenced in 2009 when his training partner, Shannon Eckstein, secured the event's title, sparking Hill's interest in a discipline that would redefine his career.

Reflecting on his past achievements while en route to the 2024 race, Hill found himself reminiscing. He compiled a list of his results from major competitions, a process he described as a trip down memory lane. "I wrote down all of my results from some of the biggest races in the sport," he shared. He was surprised to discover this was his tenth Dragon Run appearance, having previously secured three fourth-place finishes and one second, a period he humorously referred to as getting out of "those shit positions."

This marks Hill's fifth consecutive win at the event, a streak interrupted only by COVID-19 restrictions and a scaled-down race in 2022.

"It feels extra special," Hill conveyed to The Paddler. "Looking back to 2017, it just feels nice to have built this little streak. COVID obviously hindered it, but from what I have been able to do, I've done well. This year, like last year, has just been a good year. Even if I do nothing else now, it's been a success."

A Star-Studded Field and Race Dynamics

The Mox Dragon Run is a highly regarded surfski race, and in recent years, it has gained additional importance as the...
