The opening leg of the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Series kicks off in Madeira, Portugal, featuring a prestigious lineup of global talent. Returning to the site of the 2024 World Championships, athletes are eager to capitalize on familiar waters and challenging coastal conditions to launch their new seasons.
The event is headlined by some of the biggest names in the sport, including:
Kira Bester (RSA): The reigning women's world champion looking to maintain her dominance.
Gordan Harbrecht (GER): The 2024 world gold medalist and a favorite for the men's title.
Rosemary Edwards (GBR): The current U23 world champion and senior bronze medalist.
Bernardo Pereira (POR): The local favorite and reigning U23 men's world champion, leading a strong Portuguese contingent hoping to utilize their home-water advantage.
The competition is spread across two days of high-intensity racing:
Friday: Action begins with the men’s and women’s surfski singles (SS1) and various junior events.
Saturday: The event concludes with the mixed surfski doubles and the men’s junior SS2 races.
In a joint statement, Ricardo Machado (President of the Portuguese Canoeing Federation) and Viriato Timoteo (President of the Madeira Regional Canoeing Association) expressed their enthusiasm for hosting the historic event.
