The journey to the Shaw and Partners 20 Beaches Ocean Classic began dramatically for Cory Hill. Midway through a ten-hour drive to Sydney with his wife, Llani, and their three sons, Hill suddenly fell ill. His son, Coda, also became sick, forcing the family to turn back for the Gold Coast. This setback, just 24 hours before the race, seemed to end his hopes of competing.
Hours later, feeling slightly better, Hill conceived a bold plan to still race. The logistics were formidable: late afternoon, one flight remaining, his racing ski on his car, and three sick children. Llani, however, encouraged him: "Book it. Just go. What's the worst that could happen?" After a meal, Hill felt well enough to act. He called Dean Gardiner, who surprisingly confirmed he had a spare ski. With a flight booked and a hotel room secured, Hill made the last-minute trip to Sydney. He explained his determination, viewing the 20 Beaches title as a deeply pursued challenge and an opportunity to add his name to the trophy again.
The race itself started with Hill struggling against a strong field including Tom Norton, Mackenzie Hynard, Oscar Jones, and Jackson Collins, feeling "paddling uphill" early on. Officials chose the familiar Collaroy-to-Pittwater course due to weather. By the ten-kilometer mark, Hill found his rhythm. Aware of rivals' speed in the final two kilometers, he planned to accelerate, turning the end into a mental battle. In the decisive final stages, Hill and Norton led, with others close behind. Hill's strategy of building a strong lead between the ten and eighteen-kilometer marks proved effective. He crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 22 minutes, and 46 seconds, securing another victory. Collins, Norton, and Jones followed closely.
In the women's event, Jemma Smith delivered a commanding performance, winning in 1:34:46, ahead of Emily Doyle and Judit Verges Xifra.
