Cory Hill’s Challenging Path to a Third Molokai Title

Despite his 'Chill' nickname, Cory Hill faced significant hurdles before the Shaw and Partners Molokai Challenge. His 18-hour transit from Australia to Oahu, followed by a critical 30-minute flight to Molokai, was compounded by his unusual decision to travel just one day before the race. The final flight was then delayed by six hours, stranding Hill in a basic terminal. He expressed immense frustration seeing Molokai just 50 kilometers away, feeling helpless and questioning his arrival, exacerbated by a lack of amenities. His unique preparation included managing his accounting business and attending his best friend's wedding, contrasting with rivals' luxurious training. A planned business class upgrade also failed. However, upon reaching Molokai, friends helped secure food for his family, and he felt a crucial advantage, setting up his ski while others were still on Oahu.

Race Day: A Gruelling Test

The 2023 Molokai Challenge presented exceptionally demanding conditions, unlike previous years. Competitors faced a grueling grind with challenging wind patterns and 28-degree Celsius heat adding to the physical toll.

Women's Race Highlights

In the women's field, world champion Jemma Smith dominated, winning comfortably ahead of Sascha Taurins and Ellie Saffron. Smith found paddling the Ka’iwi Channel "surreal," despite the conditions.

Men's Battle for the Title

The men's race was a much tighter affair. Australian Michael Booth set an aggressive early pace, leading a strong pack including Hank McGregor, Cory Hill, and other top contenders. Hill employed a unique tactical approach, deliberately testing different lines outside the main pack during the initial 15 kilometers.
