Cory Hill discusses his fourth Molokai Challenge victory and the race's future

Cory Hill's Fourth Molokai Challenge Victory

Cory Hill secured his fourth Molokai Challenge title, acknowledging that the significantly reduced field of competitors slightly diminished its prestige. Only ten surfski paddlers undertook the iconic 52-kilometer crossing between Molokai and Oahu, a sharp decline from 39 solo racers in 2023. Despite the smaller field, the race was demanding. Hill finished in 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 48 seconds after a tough battle with local paddler Pat Dolan (3:45:04). Cole Jones (4:07:19) completed the podium, further cementing Hill's place in the event's history.

Reflecting on the Achievement and Race Future

Hill told The Paddler this victory felt "pretty special," noting the significance of matching Hank McGregor's four titles and recalling his third win alongside Clint Robinson. He acknowledged Grant Kenny's five wins, stating the race's history has always motivated him. While Hill plans to continue racing, concerns about the Molokai Challenge's long-term viability persist. Dolan had shared on social media that his last surfski solo (10th in 2023) prompted him to seek more competition, noting the lack of depth in Hawaiian surfski races. Hill praised Dolan as a "strong paddler," highlighting his consistent podium finishes. He recalled a previous race where Dolan was only two minutes behind him when Hill set a record, emphasizing...
