After a challenging year, Kieffer secures second Gorge Downwind Championships win

Austin Kieffer, a globally recognized figure in surfski paddling, has consistently been at the forefront of international competition for the past decade. Known for his infectious enthusiasm and remarkable skill, Kieffer recently admitted that his passion for elite racing had begun to fade after a particularly challenging 2023 season.

Last year proved to be a significant struggle for Kieffer, who faced numerous personal changes that contributed to what he described as his worst racing year ever. This included a sixth-place finish at the Gorge, disappointing results in Australia after falling ill, and a frustrating performance at the ICF Ocean Racing World Championships. These setbacks left him feeling burnt out and questioning his future in the sport. The Gorge Downwind Championships this year became a crucial goal, and finishing it on a high note was immensely satisfying for him.

His triumphant return saw Kieffer once again hoist the iconic hammer trophy at the Gorge Downwind Championships.

Despite a slightly less crowded elite field this year, Kieffer, now based in San Diego, was keenly aware of the challenge posed by Pat Dolan. Kieffer expressed his excitement about Dolan's participation, acknowledging their long-standing rivalry. He noted Dolan's impressive form, including a record-setting OC1 Molokai crossing and a strong showing against Cory Hill in the Molokai Challenge, making him a formidable opponent.

The event drew 709 paddlers across various crafts, with surfski competitors, including Kieffer and Dolan, drawing significant attention. Early in the surfski race, Australians Trent Martin and Kent Jenkinson set a blistering pace. Kieffer, however, opted for a more measured approach, confident in his strategy for the long race. He also observed Dolan taking a wider line, which Kieffer believed put his rival behind him initially.
