For weeks, Gordan Harbrecht struggled to grasp the reality of his recent triumph. Despite receiving his gold medal and global congratulations, the true weight of his ICF Ocean Racing World Championships win only settled in upon returning home to Rostock. A surprise party, organized by his training group and attended by friends and family, finally allowed the magnitude of his achievement to resonate. Harbrecht shared, "It was wonderful to see everyone. They are incredibly proud that someone from our local group could achieve this. I believe this victory offers a significant opportunity to further promote ocean racing in Germany and across Europe." Historically, no European athlete had secured an overall medal in the ICF Ocean Racing World Championships when strong contenders from Australia and South Africa were present. Now, Europe proudly leads the sport. Harbrecht's journey began years ago, transitioning from sprint kayaking, where he narrowly missed the 2016 Olympics. He humorously recalled his initial foray into true ocean conditions, falling out and struggling to remount his surfski. Despite early challenges, he quickly developed a deep passion for the sport, finding immense joy in the natural environment and waves. The path to becoming a world champion was arduous. Harbrecht started surfski casually in 2012 before committing fully in 2015-2016. Undeterred by skepticism, he embarked on frequent "strike missions" to warmer European locations to refine his skills, finishing 9th at the 2017 ICF World Championships and 7th in 2019. Training in harsh Baltic Sea conditions, he views this rigorous routine not as a sacrifice but a privilege, paddling almost daily with friends. This unique perspective prepared Harbrecht for his 2024 campaign, helping him overcome the disappointment of the previous year.
