If Cory Hill is the king and Clint Robinson is the grandmaster, Pierre Vilella is the undisputed "Crown Prince" and the face of the European surge in surfski. As of 2026, he is the highest-ranked European paddler and the primary challenger to Australian and South African dominance.
Pierre Vilella became a household name in the paddling world during the 2025 ICF Ocean Racing World Championships in Durban.
The Silver Medal: He finished 2nd in the world, less than a minute behind the legendary Cory Hill.
The Early Pace Setter: In a masterclass of aggressive paddling, Vilella led the race for the first half, pushing the pace so hard that the commentary team initially mistook him for the defending champion. While Hill eventually used his veteran experience to overtake him in the final kilometers, Vilella’s performance signaled a changing of the guard.
Vilella, 26, represents the Kayak Club Terre Camargue and is a multiple-time French National Champion. His rise has been methodical:
U23 Dominance: Before his senior success, he was the European U23 Champion and a bronze medalist at the U23 World Championships.
The Marathon Edge: Uniquely, Vilella balances surfski with marathon kayaking. He recently finished 12th at the Marathon World Championships in Gyor, Hungary. He credits this "flat-water" endurance training with giving him the raw power needed to grind through sections of the ocean where there are no waves to surf.
Technique: He is known for an incredibly high stroke rate and an "explosive" start, which often allows him to break away from the pack early and dictate the line of the race.
Vilella is currently the star of the Nordic Kayaks international team. His goal for 2026 is clear: to become the first Frenchman to win the Senior World Title. He has already started the 2026 season strong, winning several European Cup stages and preparing for a head-to-head rematch with Hill at the World Championships in Spain this October.
