ICF Ocean Racing Coaching Manual: A Strategic Framework for Surfski Instruction

The 2016 Ocean Racing Coaching Manual is a collaborative guide designed to standardize surfski instruction worldwide.

It is built upon four key coaching pillars:

- Required Skills,

- Equipment Know-How,

- Understanding Conditions,

- Safety Awareness.

Rather than providing a rigid training program, the manual highlights 17 core skills, with five being critical for all paddlers: efficient stroke technique, stability mastery, the ability to remount the craft in rough water, wave-handling skills, and the practical use of safety gear.

Safety is emphasized as the sport's greatest challenge, identifying the craft leash, lifejacket, and communication devices as mandatory equipment.

The manual also establishes a classification system for paddler ability and water conditions, noting that proficiency in broken waves is the truest indicator of a paddler's open-ocean competence. It serves as a foundational resource for coaches to ensure that the thrill of ocean racing is balanced with rigorous safety and technical preparation.
