Started in 1980 by local lifesavers looking to test their mettle, this is often dubbed the "World's Toughest One-Day Surfski Race." Depending on the course layout for the year, it covers around 50 to 54 kilometers. Paddlers typically start in Scarborough or Witsands, navigate around the iconic and turbulent Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point), and finish at Fish Hoek beach. Cold water, massive Atlantic swells, and gale-force South-Easterly winds make this a brutal test of endurance.
The Best Athletes:
* Hank McGregor (South Africa): The undisputed king of Cape Point, holding an incredible 8 titles.
* Kenny Rice (South Africa): A dominant modern paddler who has won the event 3 times.
* Dawid Mocke & Paul Marais (South Africa): Multiple-time winners who helped define South African ocean racing.
* Michelle Eray (South Africa): A 4-time champion in the women's division.
* Bianca Beavitt & Hayley Nixon (South Africa): Both highly decorated multi-time winners of the grueling women's race.
