While we knew our boat was strong, we didn't anticipate winning gold. Our goal was to contend for medals, but the top spot was unexpected." Close behind, fellow Australians Mackenzie Hynard (QLD) and Jemma Smith (NSW) earned the bronze medal. Locke credited Eley's familiarity with the local surf for their impressive finish. "His local knowledge was invaluable," Locke stated. "We initially tracked quite wide, which made me a little nervous, but I had complete trust in Pat's judgment. It's fantastic to race in Western Australia; the area is beautiful, and the wind conditions have been excellent all week." Eley added that sharing this achievement with family and friends on home turf made the medal even more special.
