Teneale Hatton: A Paddling Journey

New Zealand's distinguished paddler, Teneale Hatton, born on January 13, 1990, boasts an impressive career. She claimed the U23 Women’s title at the 2013 ICF Ocean Racing World Championships and holds multiple world titles in canoe sprint K1W (1000m and 5000m). Hatton also represented New Zealand at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the K1W 500m. Her paddling roots trace back to lifesaving, where she also achieved medal success.

Insights from the Champion

Reflecting on her progress since 2013, Teneale noted a significant increase in race experience. "I've gained invaluable insights into race dynamics and competitor strategies," she shared. Joining the Think Kayak team and racing the Uno Max has also been pivotal, enhancing her comfort during competitions.

Hatton maintains a dual focus on sprint kayaking and ocean racing. "While sprint remains a primary discipline, ocean racing is a high priority," she explained, emphasizing its enjoyment and benefits for her sprint training.

Her preparation over the past two years has centered on "speed, strength, and technique," guided by an excellent coach, a strategy that has proven successful.

For 2015, Teneale confirmed her participation in Tahiti, with a clear goal: "My aim is the top position, but I'm focused on executing a smart and effective race." Lacking prior experience on the Tahiti course, she plans extensive research and early arrival for familiarization. "I'm excited to race; I've heard wonderful things, and it seems an ideal location for an ocean ski world championship," she added.

Regarding changes in surfski and ocean racing since 2013, Teneale observed larger competitive fields and increased publicity. "This has led to tougher, higher-quality elite racing, which is incredibly exciting for the sport," she concluded.
