Surfski Shack Paddlers Conquer Historic Durban Seas at 2025 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships

The Surfski Shack, representing Malta, successfully competed in the 2025 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Durban, South Africa. Facing brutal conditions, the team achieved several notable results:

• Mixed Doubles (SS2): Matthew Schembri (33) and Mattea Micallef (19) completed a grueling 30km course in 2:24:56, placing 39th out of 69 crews. Despite a "wipeout" at the treacherous eManzimtoti shorebreak, they swam the final meters to secure their finish.

• Singles (SS1):

  • Mattea Micallef: Finished the 34km course in 3:03:20, ranking 14th in the U23 category and 51st overall.

  • Matthew Schembri: Clocked 2:37:11, finishing 178th in a massive field of over 400 male athletes.

  • Andreas Bohnsack: The 65-year-old veteran finished in 2:56:25, securing 18th place in the 65-69 age group.

The team’s success followed months of training and international preparation, highlighting the rising profile of Maltese surfski on the global stage.
