The International Canoe Federation Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships, held on the picturesque island of Madeira, Portugal, witnessed a formidable display of skill from Spanish athletes in the mixed surfski double category. For the second consecutive year, this event was a highlight, with Spanish teams securing the top two positions on the podium.

The 2024 title was claimed by the impressive duo of Chloe Bunnett and Victor Rodriguez, who navigated the course with exceptional precision. They completed the race in a remarkable time of 1:29:32.86. Close behind, securing the silver medal, were their compatriots Judit Verges Xifra and Walter Bouzan, the champions from the previous year, with a time of 1:29:54.95. The bronze medal was awarded to South Africa's team of Matthew Fenn and Saskia Johanna Hockly, who finished in 1:30:50.68.

Under 23 and Junior Categories See Strong Performances

Beyond the senior event, the championships also featured exciting races in the under 23 and junior mixed SS2 divisions, where South African teams particularly shone.

• In the mixed under 23 SS2, South Africa celebrated another gold medal, thanks to the outstanding performance of Georgia Singe and Ulvard Hart, who crossed the finish line in 1:29:03.27. Portugal's Bernardo Pereira and Ana Brito earned the silver with a time of 1:33:29.08, while Spain's Padlo St Mary and Sara Mengual secured the bronze.
• The mixed junior SS2 category was also topped by a South African pair, Holly Smith and Ryley Smith, who achieved a winning time of 1:36:07.16.
