South African Duo Dominates Mauritius Ocean Classic

Despite suggestions of a potential shift away from individual canoe marathon events, Hank McGregor continues to demonstrate his formidable skill in ocean racing. The seasoned South African athlete, alongside compatriot Hayley Nixon, delivered a commanding performance at the recent Investec Mauritius Ocean Classic, securing a remarkable double victory for South Africa.

McGregor Reclaims Top Spot

McGregor achieved his fourth triumph at the Mauritius Classic, finally overcoming his Australian rival, Cory Hill. This victory was particularly sweet for McGregor, who had previously been bested by Hill at the last two ICF Ocean Racing World Championships. Displaying unwavering determination, McGregor completed the challenging 24-kilometre course from Sancho Beach to Le Morne in an impressive 1 hour, 13 minutes, and 11 seconds. Hill followed shortly after with a time of 1 hour, 14 minutes, and 0 seconds, while another South African, Dawid Mocke, secured third place in 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 13 seconds.

Nixon's World Champion Performance

Hayley Nixon, the reigning world champion, lived up to her esteemed reputation with an exceptionally strong showing from start to finish. Her dominant performance saw her cross the finish line in 1 hour, 29 minutes, and 23 seconds. Fellow South African and 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, Bridgitte Hartley, finished second with a time of 1 hour, 35 minutes, and 55 seconds. The women's race further highlighted South Africa's strength in the sport, as Kyeta Purchase completed a national trifecta by claiming third place in 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 28 seconds.
