South African Paddlers Dominate in Reunion

South African world champions Kira Bester and Matthew Fenn extended their impressive winning streak, securing additional gold medals at the recent competition held in Reunion, France. The duo triumphed in their individual surfski single categories, claiming the women's and men's titles at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Ocean Racing World Cup event.

Their success in Reunion followed outstanding performances at the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Durban. There, Fenn had previously won the mixed surfski double alongside Saskia Johanna Hockly, while Bester secured first place in the women's SS1 event on her home turf.

Fenn's Commanding Performance

Matthew Fenn showcased his exceptional skill in the men's SS1 race, dominating the field to finish in 59:16.75. He was the sole competitor to complete the course in under an hour. France's Florian Revollon earned the silver medal with a time of 1:04:22.65, and his compatriot Pierre Grimoux secured the bronze in 1:07:03.27.

Bester Continues Her Winning Form

Kira Bester similarly continued her winning momentum from the World Championships, powerfully claiming the women's SS1 title. Her winning time was 1:04:13.45. Rosemary Edwards of Great Britain, a bronze medalist at the Durban World Championships, finished second in 1:06:19.42, with South Africa's Jade Wilson taking third place in 1:08:25.22.

Bester Praises Reunion's Beauty and Hospitality

Reflecting on her victory, Bester expressed immense satisfaction, stating, “It was a really nice feeling to cross the finish line first on this beautiful island.” She further described Reunion as “stunning and probably the most beautiful island I’ve ever been on.”
