Historic victories for Australian paddlers at home championships

Australian athletes Cory Hill and Jemma Smith secured remarkable gold medals at the inaugural ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships, hosted for the first time in their native country. Hill's triumph marked him as the first male competitor to claim three ICF world titles, while Smith's consecutive wins established her as the most accomplished female paddler in the history of the event.

Competitors from South Africa also performed strongly, securing several minor medals across both the men's and women's categories. Veteran racer Hank McGregor earned his third silver medal, a feat matched by Michelle Burn, who added her third silver to a collection that already includes gold and bronze. Joshua Fenn finished third in the men's event, while Kira Bester, participating in the U23 division, secured the bronze medal in the women's race.

The challenging 20-kilometer course, stretching from Fremantle’s Bathers Beach to Perth’s Scarborough Beach, attracted over 480 paddlers globally. Perth, renowned for its ideal downwind paddling conditions, delivered an exceptional environment for the competition, with a consistent 20-knot south-westerly wind propelling athletes along the western coastline. Both Smith and Hill navigated the Indian Ocean with impressive speed, achieving their world championship victories in near record time.
