Smith and Harbrecht claim victories at Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships

The Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in La Vila Joiosa, Spain, saw triumphant returns from Australia's Jemma Smith and Germany's Gordan Harbrecht, both securing top honors.

Smith's Dominant Comeback

After a two-year hiatus from elite competition, Smith made a spectacular return, claiming her third world title in the women's surfski single event. Her performance showcased enduring skill and determination.

Smith had previously won world championships in 2022 and 2023 before opting to skip the subsequent two editions. During her absence, South Africa's Kira Bester rose to prominence, securing victories in 2024 and 2025.

In a direct confrontation, Bester was unable to match Smith's pace. Smith powered through the course to finish in an impressive 1:21:08. Bester earned silver with 1:23:37, while Rosemary Edwards of Great Britain secured bronze in 1:24:33.

Reflecting on her victory, Smith expressed her excitement:

  • "It's pretty cool. I was really looking forward to this race."
  • "Not being on the start line for the World Championships for a couple of years, it's great to just be among the surfski paddling community."
  • "My strategy from the start was simply to go, take a straight line, and put everything out there."
  • "I quickly found my rhythm, focused on myself, and didn't concern myself with the other competitors."
  • "It was a bit of a surprise when I crossed the line and looked around."
  • "The women's field has developed significantly over the past few years; it's incredible to witness the depth and to have so many paddlers competing this week has been awesome."
