Perth to Host Elite Ocean Paddling Championships

Perth, Western Australia, is set to host the prestigious 2023 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships and the Masters World Championships later this year. These highly anticipated events will bring together the world's top ocean racing paddlers.

Both championships are scheduled to commence on Monday, November 27, with the competitive racing window spanning from November 30 to December 3, 2023. Notably, participation is open to all, meaning athletes do not need to qualify to compete.

A Warm Welcome to Western Australia

Phil Jones, CEO of Paddle Australia, expressed his enthusiasm for welcoming international paddlers to Australia's shores. He highlighted that the coastal waters off Perth provide some of the finest ocean racing conditions globally. Jones also noted the ICF's decision to waive qualification requirements, stating that paddlers only need to be members of their respective National Federations.

Given the increasing popularity of ocean paddling, a significant turnout is expected in Perth. This event marks a historic occasion for Australian paddlers, offering them the first chance to compete in a Canoe Ocean Racing World Championship on home soil.

Western Australia boasts a rich heritage in canoe ocean racing, regularly hosting prominent annual competitions. These include the renowned 'Shaw and Partners Doctor' race on November 25, 2023, which forms part of the broader Shaw and Partners Australian Ocean Racing Series (AORS) WA Race Week, running from November 18 to 25.

The official World Championships Race Village will open at Scarborough Beach on Monday, November 27, immediately following the conclusion of Shaw and Partners Race Week and 'The Doctor'. Various activities, including transport for training in the course area, will be arranged leading up to the championships' official commencement.
