Ocean racing stars Bester and Pereira triumph in Madeira

Bester and Pereira dominate Madeira World Series opener

Kira Bester from South Africa and Bernardo Pereira of Portugal triumphed in the inaugural stage of the International Canoe Federation Canoe Ocean Racing World Series held in Madeira. Their dominant performances marked a strong start to their respective campaigns.

Pereira secures men's title

On home Portuguese waters, Pereira, the current men's U23 world champion and a senior world bronze medallist, secured the men's surfski single gold. He completed the race in 1:15:19.60, leading a strong contingent of local paddlers.

France's Marin Lanee was the sole non-Portuguese athlete among the top five finishers, claiming second place with a time of 1:15:50.07. The bronze medal was awarded to Portugal's Mateus Ornelas (1:20:04.94), followed by compatriots Joao Santos and Celio Alves in fourth and fifth positions.

Pereira expressed his satisfaction with the event, stating, "The race was good. We experienced excellent downwind conditions for almost the entire duration. Although there was a brief upwind section near the end, it didn't detract from what was otherwise an hour of perfect enjoyment. The conditions were ideal, and we received fantastic support from the organisers."

Bester triumphs in women's category

Reigning world champion Kira Bester also delivered a commanding performance in Madeira. The South African athlete dominated the women's SS1 category, securing her victory with a time of 1:21:29.83.

Great Britain's Rosemary Edwards earned the silver medal, finishing in 1:26:30.03, while Portugal's Carlota Duarte claimed bronze with a time of 1:40:35.24. South Africa's Julia Williams and Portugal's Rafaela Costa completed the top five.
