Ocean Racing: Naples Gears Up for the Return of the Iconic 'Scugnizzo Run'

The Gulf of Naples is set to host a major celebration of paddle sports on March 28 and 29. The Circolo Ilva Bagnoli will be the headquarters for the fifth edition of the "Scugnizzo Run," a prestigious national Ocean Racing competition that attracts athletes and enthusiasts from across Italy.

The Course and Conditions

The race takes place in the iconic waters of the Gulf, following a scenic route between Bagnoli, Lido Mappatella, and Via Caracciolo, with the stunning silhouette of the Island of Nisida providing a natural backdrop. The Gulf is known for its variable winds and challenging wave patterns, which will serve as a technical and spectacular testing ground for Ocean Racing specialists—a discipline currently seeing rapid growth in Italy.

Event Highlights

The weekend is structured to balance elite competition with community engagement:

  • Saturday Morning: The event kicks off with "Pagaie in Gioco" (Paddles at Play), a promotional initiative designed to introduce families and schools to the sport.

  • National Competition: Federally registered athletes will compete in Surfski and Outrigger categories, including SS1, OC1, SS2, and OC2.

  • Saturday Evening: The day concludes with "Pagaiate di Cuore" (Paddling from the Heart), a solidarity gala featuring music and an aperitif. All proceeds from this event will be used to purchase sports equipment for Paralympic and special-needs athletes, highlighting the event's commitment to inclusion.

  • Sunday: The focus shifts to the future of the sport with races dedicated to youth categories (U12, U14, and U16), providing young paddlers with a platform to grow and gain competitive experience.

A Landmark Event

The Scugnizzo Run has solidified its place as one of the most anticipated appointments on the national Ocean Racing calendar. By combining high-level competitive sport with local promotion and a strong social mission, it celebrates the unique connection between the city of Naples and the sea.
