Ocean Racing European championships conclude with SS2 mixed junior and U23 competitions

The Italian Ocean Racing contingent returned to the water on Saturday, August 29th, for the final day of the European Championships held in Brest, France. Along the picturesque coast of Brittany, competitors engaged in the highly anticipated SS2 mixed races, featuring both junior and under 23 categories. Athletes navigated a demanding 12-kilometer technical course, contending with challenging conditions including winds gusting around 20 knots, significant waves, strong currents, and rapidly changing weather patterns.

Junior SS2 Mixed Race

In the junior competition, the Italian boat, crewed by Marilù Brambilla (SC Lecco) and Lorenzo Marrone (C. Ilva Bagnoli), finished in eleventh place with a time of 1:05:05. The gold medal was secured by the Spanish crew, completing the course in 1:01:09. They were followed by France, who took silver with 1:02:10, and Great Britain, earning bronze in 1:02:17.

Under 23 SS2 Mixed Race

The Under 23 SS2 mixed event saw the Italian team of Leonardo and Beatrice Candela (Idroscalo Club) achieve a commendable fifth-place finish in the final, recording a time of 1:03:22. Victory in this category also went to Spain, with an impressive time of 59:02. France claimed the silver medal with 1:00:49, and another Spanish crew secured the bronze in 1:00:58. This concluded a truly memorable edition of the European Ocean Racing Championships for the Italian contingent. The nation celebrated its first-ever European title in this discipline, which was triumphantly claimed last Friday by Leonardo Candela in the men's SS1 Junior event.
