NAXOS CUP: Italian Surfski SS1 2023 Titles Awarded in Giardini Naxos

The fourth edition of the 'Naxos Cup,' a significant event combining the Italian SS1 Championship and an ICF-listed International Ocean Racing competition, unfolded on May 13-14 in Sicily. Hosted by the Circolo Nautico Teocle of Giardini Naxos, under the leadership of President Maurizio Spina, the weekend was a celebration of watersports. The surfski competition, a challenging open-sea kayak discipline, saw athletes tackle an approximately 21 km downwind course from Giardini Naxos to S. Teresa di Riva. Conditions were demanding, with winds reaching 15 knots and waves up to 2.5 meters, adding to the excitement. The event successfully drew over 100 participants, a record number, all vying for the coveted national single surfski (SS1) title. Beyond the competition, the 'Naxos Cup' aimed to promote the stunning Ionian Messinian coastline. To foster youth engagement in the sport, the organizing committee introduced a successful Under 16 race on Sunday, which saw enthusiastic participation from many young talents, braving the same wind and wave conditions. In the SS1 Senior Men's category, Nicolò Razeto of Shock Wave Sport claimed the gold medal with a time of 1h01’57’’. His teammate Giovanni Saperdi secured silver in 1h02’54’’, while Mariano Bifano (Polisportiva Cilento) earned bronze, finishing in 1h03’44’’. Nicola Molitierno (LNI Cagliari) was the overall winner and Under 23 champion, completing the course in 1h05’27”. He was followed by local athlete Davide Martino (CN Teocle), who took silver in 1h08’43”, and Manuel Cogoni (LNI Cagliari), who earned bronze in 1h15'23". The Junior Men's title went to Matteo Muzio, with a time of 1h02’53’’. Among the women, Chiara Agostinetti (Unione Canottieri Livornesi) dominated, being the first woman to cross the finish line in 1h19’20" and securing the Italian Under 23 title. Alessandra Cadeddu (LNI Cagliari) triumphed in the Senior Women's category with a time of 1h36’33”, while Beatrice Candela (LNI Milano) clinched the Junior…
