McGregor Secures First Victory in Marine Surfski Series

The fifth race of the 2016 Varsity College FNB Marine Surfski Series, known as the FNB Surfski Challenge, witnessed defending men's champion Hank McGregor claim his inaugural victory of the season. The Friday evening event in Durban also featured a remarkable comeback win for Nicole Russell in the women's category.

McGregor's Dominant Performance

McGregor, a prominent figure in the Marine Surfski Series, faced a challenging start to the 2016 season, having missed the first three races and feeling unwell during the fourth. His win in race five marked a significant turning point. He expressed his relief, stating, "I missed the first three races and then wasn’t feeling well last week so to get a win finally is great." He also highlighted the importance of ocean racing as he juggles his intense training schedule for the upcoming Dusi Canoe Marathon.

The men's race was a thrilling contest against current series leader Matt Bouman. McGregor recounted their battle: "It was a big race against Matt, as it always is. We were together on the first lap and then I put in a surge which gave me a bit of a gap going into the downwind." He successfully maintained his lead, expressing satisfaction with his first series win.

Despite his victory, McGregor acknowledged the considerable challenge ahead in the overall standings. With five races remaining and only the best six results contributing to the final position, he aims to bridge the gap with Bouman. "Matt got himself a bit of a head start in the first three races but I am hoping that the next five races are as good as this one was for me and I can contest for the series title again," he remarked, emphasizing the demanding nature of the competition.
