McGregor leads South African dominance at Molokai Challenge with third victory

The demanding Maui Jim Molokai Challenge witnessed a historic performance as South African paddler Hank McGregor secured his third victory in the grueling 53-kilometer ocean crossing. On Sunday, McGregor led a remarkable clean sweep of the men's podium, with compatriots Sean Rice and Jasper Mocké finishing second and third, respectively, after battling exceptionally flat and challenging conditions between the islands of Molokai and Oahu.

The men's singles title quickly evolved into a tense five-boat contest. The formidable South African trio found themselves in a strategic duel with Australia's defending champion, Cory Hill, and his countryman Clint Robinson. Each competitor meticulously sought the most advantageous lines across the channel, which offered no assistance from swells, runs, or downwind currents, forcing paddlers to rely purely on strength and efficiency.

McGregor, representing Euro Steel/Epic Kayaks, drew upon his extensive experience, particularly from last year's equally tough conditions where he placed fourth. In the crucial closing stages, his tactical line choices proved decisive, allowing him to cross the finish line at Maunalua Beach Park a minute and a half ahead of Sean Rice, the reigning ICF ocean racing world champion from Think Kayaks. Reflecting on the arduous day, Mocké described it as "a hot, flat, and incredibly brutal experience." He emphasized the necessity of efficiency and making the most of the ocean's minimal offerings, stating, "You really had to work exceptionally hard to succeed."
