McGregor and Russell claim top honors at Durban's King of the Bay surfski event

The surfski community of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, recently gathered for the annual Bay Union King of the Bay, a thrilling 22km paddling spectacle and the second event in the Bay Union Surfski Series. With new sponsors Bay Union and Zurich, the race offered a unique course, challenging competitors to navigate Durban's harbor before heading out to sea.

Renowned paddler Hank McGregor dominated the men's race, leading from the start and maintaining his advantage throughout the demanding course to finish ahead of Matthew Bouman and Luke Nisbet. McGregor expressed satisfaction with the strong field and excellent conditions, noting his strategy to build an early lead. He praised the King of the Bay as a "unique event," delighted with his victory.

In the women's category, Nicole Russell of Fenn Kayaks/Mocké Paddling proved too strong, securing the win over Hayley Nixon and Jenna Ward. Russell highlighted the competitive spirit among the women and was thrilled to claim victory, especially as a repeat winner, emphasizing the race's special nature.

The doubles circuit also saw intense competition, with Barry Lewin and Clint Cook triumphing. Young Bailey de Fondaumiere led the junior boys, and Kyeta Purchase was the top junior girl. The event concluded with high spirits, looking forward to the next challenge, the Lion of Africa Surf Challenge, on May 1st.
