Maltese Paddlers Shatter Records in Round Gozo Circumnavigation

On September 13, 2025, five paddlers from Malta’s The Surfski Shack completed the 35km Round Gozo Challenge, breaking several course records despite battling tough headwinds and northern coast rebound waves.

Key Record-Breaking Performances:

  • Men's SS1: Matthew Schembri (33) broke his own 2023 record, finishing in 3:11:33 (previously 3:16:02).

  • Women's SS1: Larissa Micallef (35), a newcomer with only one year of experience, set a new women's record of 4:30:34, beating the 2020 record of 4:43:50.

  • Men’s 65-69 Category: Andreas Bohnsack (65) established a new age-group benchmark with a time of 3:43:21.

Other notable finishes included Samuel Borg and Michael Aquilina, who finished together at 3:52:31, both successfully breaking the 4-hour mark. The event highlighted the growing surfski community in Malta and was supported by a dedicated volunteer land and sea crew.
