The International Canoe Federation Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships are underway on the picturesque island of Madeira, Portugal. Australian paddler Cory Hill is a central figure, aiming to secure an unprecedented fourth men's surfski world title.

Hill's Pursuit and Key Challengers

Hill, a multiple past winner, faces strong opposition, notably from a formidable South African team. Former champions Nicolas Notten and Kenneth Rice are key contenders, alongside other strong paddlers like Hank McGregor. Host nation Portugal also fields a significant team.

Women's Race and Doubles Event

In the women's SS1 event, the absence of two-time Australian champion Jemma Smith creates an open field. South Africa's Michelle Burn (a past winner) seeks another triumph, while compatriot Melanie van Niekerk (a silver medallist) aims for gold. Last year's championships in Perth introduced the surfski double (SS2) as a medal event. Spain's Judit Verges Xifra and Walter Bouzan, the inaugural mixed SS2 champions, are focused on defending their title.

Event Overview and Organizer's Remarks

This eighth edition of the championships, hosted by Portugal for the third time, features a record 35 participating nations. Competitors are racing on a 20-kilometre course from Machico to Funchal. Colin Simpkins, Chair of the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing Committee, praised Madeira as a "breathtaking setting" and commended the Portuguese Canoe Federation's excellent organization. He highlighted the record international participation, anticipating a magnificent event, and noted a development camp for athletes.
