Leonardo Candela secures historic SS1 junior european championship for Italy in ocean racing at Brest

Historic victory for Italy in Ocean Racing

The inaugural day of the Ocean Racing European Championships delivered a landmark achievement for Italian canoeing. Competing in the challenging waters off Brittany, Leonardo Candela secured the men's SS1 junior european title. This triumph marks the first time Italy has claimed the top spot on the continental podium in this specific category.

Candela's victory was decisive and highly impressive. He navigated the demanding 23-kilometer Atlantic course, finishing with a time of 1:37:32. The young Italian achieved the eighth fastest overall time among all male participants, competing effectively against senior and under-23 athletes. This success underscores the growing strength of Italian Ocean Racing and awards Candela a prestigious international title.

Other Italian performances

In the junior men's event, two other Italian athletes completed the race:

  • Leonardo Brandizzi placed 21st, clocking 1:50:32.

For the junior women, Marilù Brambilla secured 12th position, completing her race in 2:02:50.

Close behind, France's Pierre Vilella claimed the senior european title in 1:33:45, while Spain's Walter Bouzan was the senior runner-up with 1:33:47.

A similar pattern emerged in the women's events, where Great Britain's Rosie Edwards dominated, winning both the Under 23 category and the overall classification with a time of 1:45:32. The senior...
