Durban's 2016 Surfski Season Kicks Off with FNB Challenge

The 2016 surfski season in KwaZulu-Natal began with the FNB Surfski Challenge, the first race of the Varsity College FNB Marine Surfski Series. Drawing 275 participants, the event saw Matt Bouman and junior Kyeta Purchase claim early victories.

Bouman Dominates Men's Race

Epic Kayaks' Matt Bouman, confident after strong Western Cape performances, dominated the men's race in calm conditions. He finished ahead of Wade Krieger and Gene Prato, securing a decisive win.

Growth in Women's Paddling Highlighted

The women's competition highlighted Durban's deep talent, notably introducing a dedicated ladies batch for the first time due to growing participation. Junior Kyeta Purchase narrowly beat Jenna Ward for victory, with Hayley Arthur taking third. Sharon Armstrong and Lynne Hauptfleisch won the women’s doubles.

Purchase Reflects on Victory and Aspirations

Following her win, Purchase expressed delight with the perfect conditions. "The conditions were absolutely perfect; you couldn't have asked for anything better!" she remarked. She also noted her intense training: "I've been training intensely throughout the festive season, twice daily, which has built a solid foundation. The Marine Surfski Series is my favorite, and I'd love to try and win it this year, despite still being a junior!"

Doubles and Short Course Action

Durban's doubles racing saw Brandon van der Walt (Cape Town) and Vanda Kiszli (Hungary) win the mixed category. Grant van der Walt, a former series contender, returned in mixed doubles with Heidi Bird. Daryl and Danica Bartho competed in SUP. On the 4km short course, Patrick McNeill won singles, while Bruce and Matthew Pender-Smith took the doubles title.
