Lanzarote readies for 2021 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships

Organizers are confident the 2021 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Lanzarote, Spain, will be a safe and successful event for international teams. Scheduled for July 4-6, this event marks a return to ocean racing for a paddling community facing a prolonged absence of competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, also featuring the 2021 ICF Masters Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships.

The competition's prestige is boosted by the formidable South African team, including multiple canoe marathon world champion Hank McGregor, 2019 silver medalist Kenny Rice, and two-time silver medalist Michelle Burn.

Jose Maria Garcia Riolobos, the event's executive director, highlighted the organizers' experience from hosting four previous Atlantic Ocean surfski races. He affirmed, “We are dedicated to providing the best and safest conditions for these World Championships.” Lanzarote's proven track record, including the 'Lanzarote International Regatta'—a pre-Olympic qualifier—and the Ironman Lanzarote, demonstrates its robust infrastructure for major international events.

Preparations are strengthened by partnerships with boat logistics and rental companies, alongside a travel agency offering financial guarantees to participants. In collaboration with the ICF, organizers have implemented world-class COVID-19 safety protocols. The Canary Islands maintain low infection rates, supported by strict measures to prevent viral spread.

To facilitate broader participation, team entry limits have been relaxed, enabling more athletes to compete. The 2019 ICF World Championships in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, France, saw South Africa's Sean Rice secure his second title, while New Zealand's Danielle McKenzie claimed her first gold medal.
