ICF unveils major changes to ocean racing, including prize money and world ranking

Ocean racing, under the International Canoe Federation (ICF), is set to undergo significant transformation, becoming the first ICF discipline to mandate prize money, establish a world ranking for World Championship participants, and introduce official Masters World Championships. These extensive program revisions, including a new competition format, were formally approved at the recent ICF Congress. Mario Santos, chairman of the ocean racing committee, emphasized that “These changes build upon an already successful ICF ocean racing program, serving as a reward for the athletes, officials, and volunteers who have diligently developed the sport’s brand. We are confident these steps will elevate ocean racing to new heights, and further developments are planned to continue its global promotion and growth.”

Revised Qualification and Ranking Structure

To improve World Championship accessibility, the method for calculating paddler rankings has been updated. The introduction of world ranking points aims to significantly raise competitive standards, with new minimum criteria for qualification events ensuring top athletes are duly recognized.

• World Cup Events: To qualify for world ranking points, World Cup events must feature participation from at least two continents and five distinct countries.
• Continental Championships: These championships require a minimum of three countries and ten athletes per event to be eligible for ranking points.
• National Championships: For national events to contribute to world ranking points, they must include at least 50 athletes in the open men’s category, 20 athletes in the open women’s category, and ten athletes in all other categories.
