ICF Unveils Major Event Hosts Through New Bidding System

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has announced the hosts for several upcoming World Championships and World Cups, utilizing its recently introduced bidding framework. During their meeting in Hangzhou, China, on March 4 and 5, the ICF Board of Directors confirmed eight events spanning five distinct disciplines. Key allocations include:

• Two ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Cups for the current year, awarded to La Vila Joiosa, Spain, and Reunion, France.
• An ICF Stand Up Paddling World Cup in 2026, to be held in Torbay, Devon, Great Britain.
• La Plagne, France, will host an ICF Wildwater Canoeing World Cup in 2026.
• Canada is slated to host an ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup in 2026, subject to ICF conditions.
• The ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships will take place in Pattaya, Thailand, in 2027, marking the first time this event will be held in Asia. Ivrea, Italy, will host the 2028 edition.
• Balatonfured, Hungary, secured the rights for the 2028 ICF SUP World Championships.
• Krakow, Poland, originally set for the 2028 Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships, will now host the event in 2029.

A New Era for Event Selection

This round of allocations represents a significant milestone, as it is the inaugural instance where the ICF’s premier events have been chosen using the new bidding framework. This system, endorsed at the ICF Congress in Antalya, Turkiye, last November, mirrors the International Olympic Committee’s candidature approach. It promises enhanced transparency and is designed to foster the global expansion of paddle sports.
