ICF unveils an extensive 2018 calendar featuring multiple world championships and Olympic venue returns

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has announced its 2018 event calendar, promising an action-packed year. Highlights include world championships, the inaugural Stand Up Paddling (SUP) world title, the Youth Olympic Games, and competitions at former Olympic venues in Rio and Atlanta.

2018 World Championships and Key Events

World championships are scheduled for canoe slalom, sprint, marathon, polo, dragon boat, wildwater, and provisionally, the ICF’s first SUP world titles. U23 and junior competitions are also set for sprint and slalom. ICF President Jose Perurena highlighted the "exceptional" global lineup, including the exciting SUP addition.

Portugal will host the Canoe Sprint, Paracanoe, and Canoe Marathon World Championships, plus the inaugural ICF Stand Up Paddling world titles (August 30-September 2, Esposende/Viana do Castelo).

Canoe slalom returns to Rio's Deodoro Olympic venue in September. The Youth Olympic Games are in Buenos Aires in October, preceded by an April qualifying event in Barcelona, which includes a training camp for the YOG format.

Junior and U23 World Championships include sprint in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and slalom in Ivrea, Italy. North America hosts Canoe Polo (Welland, Canada, August) and Dragon Boat (Lake Lanier, Gainesville, USA, September). Wildwater World Championships are in Muota, Switzerland, in June. World Cup events, including slalom at La Seu (Barcelona 1992) and Augsburg (Munich 1972), are also planned.
