ICF targets increased involvement in global multi-sport competitions

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) is committed to significantly enhancing its representation at prominent global multi-sport competitions, as declared by President Thomas Konietzko.

In line with this objective, President Konietzko disclosed that the ICF has formally submitted an application for inclusion in the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to take place in Victoria, Australia. Furthermore, discussions have commenced with Italy, the host nation for the next Mediterranean Games.

Collaborating with Paddle Australia, the ICF has specifically proposed the addition of ocean racing to the 2026 Commonwealth Games program. A substantial number of ICF's member federations, 29 in total, are also part of the Commonwealth. Many top ocean racing athletes hail from Commonwealth nations, including South Africa, New Zealand, England, and Australia.

Colin Simpkins, who chairs the ICF ocean race committee, emphasized the potential, stating, "This would provide an ideal platform to demonstrate the prowess of the Commonwealth Games within this particular canoe discipline." He further noted the strong local backing: "Ocean racing enjoys considerable community enthusiasm across Australia and especially in regional Victoria, being a highly popular recreational water sport. From the ICF and Paddle Australia's viewpoint, existing facilities could be shared with other events such as open water swimming or triathlon, thereby avoiding extra expenses."

Meanwhile, ICF delegates are engaged in discussions with the organizers of the forthcoming Mediterranean Games in Italy. Historically, certain canoe disciplines have featured in these Games. With Italy hosting, the ICF aims to explore the introduction of non-Olympic disciplines like ocean racing, canoe polo, or SUP into the event schedule.
