ICF selects host cities for 2025 world championships

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has confirmed that Penrith Whitewater Stadium in Sydney, Australia, will host the 2025 canoe slalom and extreme canoe slalom world championships. This significant event marks a return to the iconic venue, which previously staged canoe slalom during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, exactly 25 years prior.

Additionally, the ICF board selected Milan, Italy, as the host for the 2025 canoe sprint and paracanoe world championships. Further major competitions in various paddling disciplines are slated to take place in France, Portugal, Hungary, and Bulgaria.

The decision to bring the championships back to Sydney follows extensive redevelopment and modernization of the former Olympic site. Penrith last welcomed a senior world championship in 2005 and is renowned for regularly hosting elite paddlers at its annual summer competitions.

ICF President Jose Perurena highlighted the significance of utilizing Olympic venues, stating that such locations offer a lasting legacy for their host cities. He noted that most canoe slalom Olympic sites continue to host international events, citing the upcoming 2024 world championships in Augsburg, Germany, which will commemorate 50 years since slalom's Olympic debut in Munich. Perurena also emphasized Penrith's role as a crucial host, especially with Brisbane potentially hosting the 2032 Olympic Games.

Milan's selection marks the first time since 2015 that it will host the canoe sprint and paracanoe events. This will occur just one year before the Italian city is scheduled to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Other 2025 World Championship Venues

• Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, for the junior and U23 canoe sprint events.
• Foix, France, which will welcome the junior and U23 canoe slalom and extreme slalom titles, marking its first major ICF event in 15 years.
• Gyor, Hungary, for the canoe marathon world championships.
