ICF elevates OC1 to medal event status at Canoe Ocean Racing world cups

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has announced a significant expansion for its Canoe Ocean Racing World Cups, confirming that the OC1 class will be an official medal event for both male and female competitors starting next season. This pivotal decision is set to inject new excitement and opportunities into the sport.

This landmark move represents a major advancement for ocean racing, designed to boost participation, accelerate development across regions, and inspire new generations of athletes. The OC1 discipline is expected to attract a broader range of athletes, nations, and cultural traditions, while also creating new avenues for sponsorship.

Marian Sarbu, Chair of the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing Committee, expressed enthusiasm. "The inclusion of OC1 has been long-awaited by our community," Sarbu stated. "It unites athletes from different paddling traditions under one global platform, strengthening our events and enriching our sport, accelerating our mission worldwide."

The OC1 class, known for its deep cultural roots and technical demands, will introduce a fresh dynamic to Canoe Ocean Racing. It offers nations with strong outrigger canoeing traditions a prominent stage to showcase talent and encourages new participants.

Sarbu also highlighted the collective effort. "This accomplishment reflects the dedication of our entire team," he remarked, calling it a "historic step forward for Canoe Ocean Racing."

Four ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Cups are approved for 2026. The first will be in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia (July 3-5). Tahiti hosts the second (July 31-August 2). The third is set for Molokabra, Brazil (September 19-21), with the final event in Reunion (November 9-15).
