ICF community remembers Joao Tomasini Schwertner, a dedicated advocate for canoe sports

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) is expressing profound sorrow over the passing of Joao Tomasini Schwertner, a dedicated board member and fervent supporter of canoe sports, who died in Brazil on Sunday after experiencing complications from Covid-19. At 61 years old, Mr. Tomasini was recognized as one of Brazil's most enduring figures in Olympic sports leadership. He had presided over the Brazilian Canoe Federation (CBCa) since 1989 and simultaneously served on the Brazilian Olympic Committee for the same duration.

Tributes from ICF Leadership

ICF President Jose Perurena offered heartfelt condolences for his long-standing associate and friend. Perurena emphasized, "For numerous years, Joao tirelessly championed the expansion and advancement of canoeing, not only across the Pan American area but globally." He added that thanks to Joao, the sport of canoeing in his region consistently held a significant voice within the ICF. "His profound passion for the sport was evident to everyone, and his countless hours of dedication will forever be remembered." Perurena concluded by stating, "He was also a cherished friend to all members of the canoeing community. His death, caused by this terrible virus, will resonate deeply across the entire paddling world."Mr. Tomasini held the presidency of the South American Canoe Federation (CoSurCa) from 2010 to 2018, and had been leading the Pan American Canoe Federation (COPAC) since 2017. His involvement with the ICF board began in 1994, and he served two terms as vice-president: from 1998 to 2008, and again from 2010 to 2014. After testing positive for Covid-19 on December 17, he was admitted to the Marcelino Champagnat Hospital in Brazil the following day, where he spent a month in the intensive care unit.ICF Vice-President and President of the German Canoe Federation, Thomas Konietzko, remarked that the canoeing community was immensely indebted to Mr. Tomasini.
