Key Decisions from the ICF Board Meeting

The recent ICF board meeting in Beijing saw several significant announcements, notably the designation of host cities for future ICF world championships, including the 2019 Stand Up Paddling (SUP) world titles. Another key discussion point was the remarkable expansion of canoeing activities within China.

China is poised to host a minimum of four ICF canoe world championships in the upcoming years, with two of these, specifically SUP and marathon events, scheduled for later this year. Furthermore, the nation will stage major international competitions in canoe slalom, dragon boat, and wildwater disciplines from 2019 to 2023. China has also been identified as a potential host for the ICF canoe sprint Super Cup this year.

Governance and Athlete Welfare

The ICF board revealed plans for a global search to appoint the sport's inaugural ethics commissioner. ICF President Jose Perurena emphasized the critical nature of this position, stating it demands an individual of exceptional caliber. Perurena commented, "As with any sport, our aspiration is never to require the services of an ethics commissioner." He added, "However, should the need arise, it will be comforting to know that our ethics commissioner is a highly respected figure within the international community."

The board additionally reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to implementing safeguarding protocols across all canoeing disciplines. This includes addressing crucial issues such as sexual harassment, racial discrimination, bullying, and ensuring the protection of minors.
