ICF announces host cities for upcoming World Championships

World Championship canoeing will return to Dartmouth in Canada and Augsburg in Germany in 2022, following decisions made by the International Canoe Federation in Tokyo on Friday. Dartmouth will host the 2022 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, while Augsburg will be the home of the 2022 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. The 2022 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships were awarded to Szeged, Hungary, and the 2022 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships will be held in Ivrea, Italy. Host cities for world championships in other ICF disciplines were also decided. Ponte de Lima in Portugal will host the 2022 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships, Saint Omer in France will be home to the 2022 ICF Canoe Polo World Championships, and Treignac in France will be the location of the 2022 Wildwater World Championships. The 2020 ICF World Ocean Racing Championships were awarded to Viana do Castelo in Portugal, and the 2021 Ocean Racing World titles will go to Lanzarote in Spain. The 2022 Dragon Boat World Championships have been awarded to Ternopil in Ukraine, while the dragon boat club world titles 12 months earlier will be held in Poznan, Poland. It will be the fourth time Augsburg will host the canoe slalom world championships, having last hosted the showcase event in 2003. Augsburg, which hosted canoe slalom when it made its Olympic debut in Munich in 1972, bid for the 2022 titles under the theme of “Coming Home”. “You have been familiar with our ‘eiskanal’ since 1972,” Augsburg Deputy Mayor, Dirk Wurm, said in a presentation to the ICF board meeting in Tokyo. “45 years ago canoe slalom began its Olympic existence in Augsburg. In 2022 everything will be new.
