Hong Kong welcomes over 400 athletes for Asia's inaugural ICF Ocean Racing world championship

Hong Kong is currently hosting the inaugural ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Asia, drawing over 400 athletes from 33 countries. The powerful South African team is widely considered the early favorite.

This third edition of the global championships unfolds against Hong Kong's scenic coastal waters. The 22.25-kilometer course begins at Clearwater Bay and concludes at the picturesque Stanley Beach.

Mario Santos, Chairman of the ICF Ocean Racing Committee, expressed confidence that the Hong Kong Canoe Union would deliver an exceptional event, remembered for years to come. He also highlighted the championships' goal to establish a lasting legacy for ocean racing in Hong Kong and across Asia, aiming to boost participation and promote canoeing in coastal nations globally.

The formidable South African squad includes elite athletes like 2013 world champion Sean Rice, his brother Kenny, and world marathon champion Hank McGregor in the men's category. The women's team features 2013 silver medalist Michelle Burn and Olympic medalist Bridgitte Hartley.

For the first time, the championships introduce junior, U23, and masters races. Additionally, the inaugural Asian Championships will be contested on Friday.

Anthony Chan Wai-lun, President of the Hong Kong Canoe Union, noted that the impressive lineup of world-class paddlers would provide thrilling moments for enthusiasts. He outlined the union's mission: to engage the public, encourage greater sport involvement, and ultimately foster a local canoe ocean racing world champion.

The elite women's title race, with 21 athletes from 13 nations, is set for Saturday. The men's open event, featuring 42 competitors from 17 nations, will take place on Sunday.
