Hangzhou's Grand Canal hosts major paddling event

Over 500 paddlers from thirty Chinese provinces gathered in Hangzhou from June 6th to 7th for a major competition, the 2026 "Grand Canal" Canoe Marathon Series (Hangzhou leg) and the second Hangzhou Public Canoeing Open. This event utilized an ancient waterway, blending historical legacy with contemporary sport.

As one of China's most significant public canoeing events, the "Grand Canal" Canoe Marathon Series promotes the sport's development by leveraging the rich historical and cultural resources along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.

The Hangzhou event featured 10km Canoe Ocean Racing and SUP, with divisions for both open and masters participants, aged 15 to 65. It attracted experienced enthusiasts and grassroots participants, offering a platform to showcase skills and connect.

The race route, in the core waters of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Hangzhou section, connected landmarks like Wulinmen Pier and Gongchen Bridge. Paddlers navigated through ancient bridges and canal landscapes, appreciating the cultural heritage of this World Cultural Heritage waterway while experiencing competitive challenge.

China's mass canoeing has seen strong growth, with more cities hosting events using natural water resources. Hangzhou, through its Grand Canal canoeing events, pioneers a model integrating cultural heritage protection, urban waterfront utilization, and sports, enabling greater public access to water sports.

Beyond the main competition, organizers offered public canoeing experience activities, attracting numerous citizens and tourists. Under professional guidance and safety assurance, participants of all ages enjoyed paddling, fostering greater public engagement with water sports.
