French paddlers claim victories over world champions in Reunion

French paddlers triumph at Reunion World Cup

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Ocean Racing World Cup in Reunion witnessed remarkable performances from French athletes. Pierre Vilella secured the men's surfski single title, overcoming the challenge of South Africa's 2021 world champion, Nicolas Notten. In the women's SS1 event, France's Thais Delrieux also celebrated a significant victory, defeating Spain's Chloe Bunnett, a decorated world gold medallist.

Vilella's victory in the men's race was a close contest, with only 18 seconds separating him from Notten. The French paddler completed the course in 1:11.07, just ahead of Notten's 1:11.25. Fellow Frenchman Florian Revollon also earned a podium spot, finishing third with a time of 1:19.38.

In the women's competition, Delrieux claimed her SS1 title in 1:26.37. Chloe Bunnett, who had recently won mixed surfski double gold at the World Championships in Madeira, Portugal, aimed to add a World Cup title but ultimately secured the silver medal with a time of 1:28.51. The bronze medal went to France's Vanina Paoletti, who finished in 1:37.29.

Despite not securing the top spot, Bunnett expressed her enthusiasm for participating in the Reunion World Cup, commending the event's excellent organization. She noted her decision to compete was driven by the appeal of visiting a new location and the promising appearance of the La Run Ocean race. Bunnett mentioned that the organizers were very helpful, which gave her the confidence to make the effort and experience what the race had to offer.
